IWMA members collect construction and demolition (C&D) waste in skips of various sizes. The material is segregated at recovery facilities where we recover aggregate, wood, metals, soil, plasterboard, cables, plastics packaging, cardboard packaging, etc. It is important to use a reputable waste company for C&D waste collections as there is an unfortunate history of illegal dumping of this type of waste in Ireland. The fine material that is screened from C&D waste usually contains sulphate in the form of gypsum, which is used to make plaster and plasterboard. Illegal dumping of this material causes pollution of groundwater and the original generator of that waste can be liable for environmental damage caused by such illegal dumping. Hence the importance of selecting a reputable company to collect these waste types.

The EU Waste Framework Directive sets a target of 70% Recovery of C&D wastes by 2020. Ireland has exceeded that target for many years.
